We started our duck adventures in March of 2021, when we brought home 4 little fluff balls from the neighborhood garden store (which turned out to be drakes!) After a big learning curve, we got into the swing – or waddle – of things and ended up getting 6 Ancona ducks the next year.
Though it has been wonderful to have them in the family, it has come with exhaustion, frustration and even heartbreak. But I don’t regret getting our feathery babies at all. They are great company (even though they are a bit bossy), fun to watch and cheaper than therapy…sometimes!
Our Flock:
- Rock Star (aka Rock) – Black Swedish or Magpie – To us he’s just Rock!
- Gustafson – (aka Gus Gus) – Black Swedish
- Fifi (aka the French Duck) – Ancona – If we had a queen of the run, it would be her!
- Sophia – Ancona
- Betsey (aka Betsey Lou) – Ancona
- Lady (aka Little Lady) – Ancona
- Harley – Ancona
- Freckles (aka Fearless Frek) – Ancona – The smallest duck in our flock and she is not scared of anything.
Those we’ve lost – RIP
Having animals is not without heartache. In the short 4 years that we have had ours, we have lost 3 ducks.
- Lovely – Mallard – less than 1 week old, seizures
- Love – Mallard – 5 months, drowned – we think he picked a fight with Rock or Gus, and lost.
- Jackie Ilean – Pekin – 6 weeks (?) – given to us to rehab – had a bad case of wry neck that I didn’t know about when received her. Initially did good, then quickly deteriorated.
