I am not a history buff at all. I would much rather tour historic sites with my camera then to sit and read about them.

My husband on the other hand has an ever-growing library of anything history related. If asked he can essentially give you a timeline of anything that happened in our country in the last 246+ years.

After being married for so long you tend to start enjoying what your spouse enjoys, and even though I have started reading and enjoying certain time periods in history – some are still keeping their secrets hidden to me.

As a student, my family moved a lot, making it hard to keep up on basic education subjects like math and english. History had little chance to gain a traction in my young mind. But, as a homeschool mom, I think that it is important for students to have a good understanding of history.

In the immortal words of Edmund Burke:

“Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it”.

I will note that the events leading to the that historic day when our country decide they had had enough, is one that I am familiar with. You don’t have to be a big reader either to enjoy and learn about our nations birth. I would recommend the miniseries “John Adams” from HBO. It’s one of our favorites and is watched at least once a year.

Here are some of quotes from our founding fathers:

The true source of our suffering has been our timidity. We have been afraid to think…

John Adams

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Benjamin Franklin

The greatest danger to American freedom is a government that ignores the Constitution.

Thomas Jefferson

And my personal favorite…

One useless man is a shame, two is a law firm, and three is a Congress.

John Adams
