Making Weekly Dinner Menus

I recently read an article that said that one of the most stressful things a woman does on a daily basis – some men fall into this category also – it’s figuring out what’s for dinner! At first, I laughed – because that’s totally me! Then I started thinking about it. It’s actually sad when you think about it, but it is completely true. I will be completely fine all day but as soon as my husband or daughter asks ‘What’s for dinner?” – my mind goes blank. Uhhh, ummm, hmmm

There are benefits to creating a menu ahead of time – the biggest being that you always know what’s for dinner! And in the end, you will save time because you don’t have to worry about rummaging thru the pantry trying to find something at the last minute – and you will save money -because you can make the menu so that you use leftovers, and with meals planned out days in advance you will be less likely to head for fast food instead.

Here are some tips I use to make a weekly menu:

  • write down what my family eats – and I ask them, maybe they remember meals that I don’t
  • look at the weeks activities – Do you have a night that runs late, choose something that is quick to make
  • use a crock-pot – they are a life saver!
  • I try to set up meals so that I can use up leftovers – I hate throwing food out!
  • make a list and grocery shop – and stick to the list (this will also save money!)

Here are a couple more tips to help:

Prep tip: save time -already have the cutting board out for veggies? save time for the next night by cutting extra veggies for it while everything’s out.

Another tip: I also have groceries on hand for “no time” meals. Meaning that I got home later than anticipated and have no time to cook. I am not a big fan of processed food but when you are in a bind with kids whining that they are hungry a can of chili or soup with crackers, or frozen fish sticks and fries can go a long way!

What are some tips you use to make a meal time easier?
